How do you burn wooden wicks?
How to burn a candle
with wooden wicks?
The ultimate guide for a long-lasting burn time, an even melt pool, and that characteristic crackling sound — night after night.
Candles with wooden wicks offer a burning experience unlike anything you've known. The gentle crackle, the broad flame, the warm glow — these are details that transform an ordinary candle into a ritual. But like any fine craft, this too requires the right technique.
Why wooden wicks? What makes wooden wicks so special?
Unlike traditional cotton wicks, wooden wicks burn wider and more stably. They produce a lower, more horizontal flame that melts the wax more evenly. The characteristic crackle — the sound of a fireplace in miniature — turns every burning moment into an atmospheric ritual.
However, wooden wicks do require a little more attention than a regular wick. Those who know the basic rules will enjoy perfect candles, time after time.
Crackling sound
The characteristic crackle creates a unique, homely atmosphere that cotton wicks cannot match.
Even melt pool
The broad flame creates an even melt pool that prevents tunneling.
Longer burn time
A properly burning candle with a wooden wick lasts longer than a comparable cotton wick.
Step by step
01 Trim the wick to the correct length
Before lighting the candle, check the length of the wooden wick. The ideal length is 3 to 5 mm above the candle surface. A wick that is too long will produce a flame that is too large and unstable. A wick that is too short may be difficult to light or go out prematurely.
Use a wick trimmer or small scissors. Also remove any charred pieces of wood from the previous burning session.
02 Light the candle correctly
Use long matches or a long lighter — this way you can comfortably reach the wick, even if the candle holder is deeper. Hold the flame against the base of the wick, not the tip. Wait patiently until the entire top of the wick begins to burn evenly.
This takes slightly longer than with a cotton wick — be patient. If the flame is not stable after 30 seconds, blow it out, let the wick cool for 10 seconds, and try again.
03 The first burn — the most important
The very first time you light a new candle determines how it will burn for the rest of its life. Let the candle burn long enough until the melt pool reaches the full diameter of the candle holder. This prevents tunneling — the phenomenon where the candle only burns down the middle, creating a deep tunnel.
Depending on the diameter of your candle holder, the first burn takes 2 to 4 hours. A rule of thumb: allow 1 hour per 2.5 cm diameter. Do not leave the room during this first burning session.
04 Maintenance after each burning session
After each use, remove the charred pieces of wood from the wick. You can do this with a soft brush, a tissue, or by carefully blowing them away after the candle has completely cooled. Charred residue in the melt pool will cause smoke and a less pure scent.
Then trim the wick again to 3 to 5 mm. Your candle is then ready for the next burning session.
Safety Tips
Still having trouble with your wick?
Wooden wicks are a natural product — sometimes the wood is slightly thicker or thinner than expected. In rare cases, this can affect burning performance. Don't worry: we always resolve it.
Send us a photo or short video of the burning candle. We'll review it together and, if necessary, send extra wicks that you can insert into the wax for a more complete burn.
